It evolved naturally in English speech during the 19th century, drawing from the metaphor of thoughts "crossing" the mind like passing travelers. No single inventor or exact first use exists; it's a common colloquialism rooted in everyday language patterns.

One of the earliest printed instances appears in an 1874 Atlantic Monthly article by Robert Dale Owen, where he writes: "the thought did cross my mind that if..." It gained traction in literature and conversation thereafter, and today, it conveys understatement or mild admission, often in casual contexts like "The thought did cross my mind to call, but I forgot."
