82 - Change My Mind
"Change my mind," a sassy challenge daring folks to sway a strong opinion, exploded as a meme in 2018 when conservative comedian Steven Crowder sat at a table with a sign saying "Male privilege is a myth: Change my mind" at Texas Christian University, sparking viral debates and endless Photoshop parodies. The phrase itself echoes older English idioms like "change one's mind" from Middle English around the 1500s, rooted in flexible thinking urged by economist Keynes ("When facts change, I change my mind"). In the brain, it taps confirmation bias where the prefrontal cortex clings to beliefs via dopamine rewards, but amygdala tweaks and new evidence can rewire via neuroplasticity if arguments pierce defenses.
"A leopard doesn't change its spots" is a proverb from the Bible's Jeremiah 13:23 (around 600 BC), to argue habitual evil-doers can't suddenly turn good, hitting English print by 1546 and sticking as a warning against trusting reform in stubborn folks. In the brain, this reflects fixed neural pathways in the basal ganglia that groove deeply set habits via dopamine loops, making change tough without massive rewiring through neuroplasticity, though prefrontal overrides can nudge new behaviors over time unlike a leopard's unalterable camouflage.
As always though, you are free to interpret this piece however you like.
