"Under the influence," now shorthand for being buzzed or drunk on booze or drugs (like DUI charges), started in the 1860s from astronomy where planets were "under the influence" of stars' flowing powers, evolving via Italian "influenza" (meaning stellar "flow" into flu epidemics thought star-caused). By the late 1800s, it shifted to human sway—like emotions or substances "influencing" behavior—before sticking to intoxication in legal lingo around 1900. In the brain, alcohol or drugs flood neurotransmitters like dopamine and GABA, dialing down prefrontal control for impulsivity while amping reward circuits, mimicking how emotions "flow in" to skew decisions like the stars once "influenced" fates.
