Brain coral got its name because its bumpy, grooved surface looks just like a human brain (think wrinkled folds and valleys). These tough, stony corals (like Diploria or Colpophyllia species) live in the warm waters of the Caribbean, Atlantic, and Pacific, building massive round colonies up to 6 feet wide that can last 900 years by slowly adding calcium carbonate skeletons a few millimeters a year. Tiny polyps team up in tight groups to form the whole thing, feeding on plankton and algae while acting as key reef builders that shelter fish and protect shores; they've been around for millions of years but face threats today from warming oceans and bleaching.
