Psychedelic describes mind-manifesting drugs or experiences—like LSD, mushrooms, or ayahuasca—that twist perception, spark wild visions, and unlock deep thoughts, often feeling like a trip through hidden brain layers. Psychiatrist Humphry Osmond coined the term in 1956 from Greek roots "psyche" (mind) and "delos" (clear) during a letter to poet Aldous Huxley, building on ancient shamanic rituals from 10,000-year-old cave art to indigenous ceremonies worldwide. It exploded in the 1960s counterculture with Timothy Leary's "acid tests," then faded under bans but roared back in the 2000s for therapy treating depression and PTSD, proving its power for healing and creativity.
