68 - The River of Consciousness

Similar to piece number 57 – Use Your Imagination – this is how I experience the world around me. I have my own thoughts and ideas yes, but also I pick up on things outside of myself.

Rick Rubin talks about this a lot and we love that for him.

Other people interpret the metaphor differently; picturing your mind's endless stream of thoughts, feelings, and awareness flowing like a nonstop river, sometimes calm, sometimes wild with rapids. It comes from William James in the 1890s, who described consciousness as a continuous "stream" rather than choppy bits, later echoed by Oliver Sacks in his 2017 book The River of Consciousness exploring how our inner flow shapes perception and memory. People use it today in mindfulness, neuroscience, and philosophy to capture that fluid, ever-changing mental life where ideas drift, merge, and evolve without fixed banks.
