65 - The Reality Distortion Field

We all have one.

The "reality distortion field" (RDF) is a term for someone's superpower-like charisma to bend what's possible, convincing themselves and others that crazy goals—like deadlines or inventions—are totally doable through sheer belief, hype, and persistence. Apple engineer Bud Tribble coined it in 1981 to describe Steve Jobs' effect on the Macintosh team, pulling from Star Trek where aliens warp reality with mind power; Jobs learned the vibe earlier from a college mentor and used it to push miracles like rushed products or Gorilla Glass for the iPhone. It spread in business lore via Jobs' biographies, now shorthand for visionary leaders who rewrite limits, for better (innovation) or worse (unrealistic pressure).

But Stavros-lore aside, the mind with all its filters, prejudices, programming and inherent wiring, chooses to see what it wants to see around it. Meaning that even if you are not engaging in deliberate RDFing for other people, you are constantly doing some version of it on yourself.
