Lateral thinking is a creative way to solve problems by looking at them from new, unusual angles instead of straight, logical steps.

The term was coined in 1967 by Maltese psychologist Edward de Bono in his book "The Use of Lateral Thinking." He used examples like the Nine Dots Puzzle and the Judgement of Solomon to show how indirect ideas can break through stuck thinking.

De Bono contrasted it with "vertical thinking," which follows step-by-step logic, calling lateral thinking "thinking outside the box." It grew popular in business, education, and design for sparking innovation and finding fresh solutions.
