31 - Riffing
Riffing. Jamming. Brainstorming.
Any word will do, but they all mean much the same thing.
Riffing comes from jazz music in the early 1900s. A "riff" was a short, repeated musical phrase that musicians would play over and over as a foundation. Jazz musicians began improvising on top of these riffs—making up new melodies and variations without planning ahead.
By the mid-1900s, the term spread beyond music. People started using "riffing" to describe any spontaneous creative exploration—tossing out ideas, building on each other's thoughts, and seeing where it leads.
Today, "riffing" means brainstorming or jamming creatively—whether in music, writing, conversation, or art. It suggests playful experimentation without rigid structure, letting ideas flow naturally and evolve in real-time.
