12 - Going Dotty
'Going dotty' is a British idiom meaning to become eccentric, silly, or mildly crazy. It originated in the 14th-15th century from 'dotty poll' (dotty head), where 'dotty' derives from 'dote'—an old word for acting foolishly or senile due to age or infatuation. The phrase gained popularity in the 19th-20th centuries for lighthearted descriptions of quirky behaviour.
Polka dots originated in the mid-1800s during Europe's Industrial Revolution, when sewing machines enabled precise, round dots on fabric—previously linked to disease like plague spots. The name "polka dot" emerged around 1857, tying to the popular polka dance craze (1840s-1860s), first printed in Godey's Lady’s Book.
Dots entered fine art via Pointillism (1880s, Seurat, Signac), using tiny dots for optical mixing. Modern icons include Malevich's 1915 Black Circle, Taeuber-Arp's 1930s circles, and Yayoi Kusama's obsessive polka dot works from 1965 onward, symbolizing infinity and psyche.
