The term "deep work" refers to focused, distraction-free effort on demanding tasks that create real value.

Cal Newport, a computer science professor, coined it in his 2016 book "Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World." He contrasted it with "shallow work," like checking emails, arguing deep work builds rare skills in a distracted digital age.

I’m a big fan of Cal’s and I have been following his work for years now. I also highly recommend his book Digital Minimalism.

The idea of Deep Work drew from thinkers like Carl Jung but gained popularity through Newport's blog and book, influencing productivity advice in business, tech, and writing. It now promotes rituals like time-blocking to maximize focus amid constant notifications.
