A placebo is a fake treatment (like a sugar pill or saline shot), that has no real medical power, but tricks your brain into feeling better anyway because you believe it'll work, often easing pain, stress, or even symptoms like nausea. In the brain, expectation lights up the prefrontal cortex and reward areas, releasing feel-good chemicals like endorphins and dopamine while dialing down pain signals from the amygdala and spinal cord, basically turning your mindset into a natural painkiller that can measurably change blood flow, heart rate, and inflammation.

I created this piece whilst listening to ‘Every You, Every Me’ on repeat.
