17 - Pollock: "I Hope you're Going To Clean That Up." The Glymphatic System: "I Always F#%king Do."

from $195.00

I got to learn about all sorts of fun things while I was working on this project. I knew a fair bit already, but one thing that was new to me was the glymphatic system. Discovered in 2012 by neuroscientist Maiken Nedergaard and her team, the glymphatic system is like a special cleaning and delivery system inside your brain. It moves a clear fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through spaces around blood vessels in the brain. This fluid helps wash away waste and harmful stuff that builds up in your brain cells, kind of like how taking out the trash keeps your house clean. The waste is carried out of the brain to be removed from the body. The system also helps deliver important nutrients like sugar and oils to brain cells, keeping them healthy. This cleaning happens mostly when you are deep asleep, which is why sleep is so important for your brain health. The system uses special cells called astrocytes to help move the fluid along the right paths, almost like helpers guiding the cleaning fluid. This way, your brain stays fresh and healthy by clearing out things it doesn't need and spreading the things it does need throughout the brain.
